Historical Sites & Art of Rome - Part II

Assorted Other Pictures & Places

This door knocker was the size of a bowling ball.

As near as I could tell, some sort of star chart.

The "lockers" the priests used - in the Vatican museum.

Al took an awful lot of pictures in the Egyptian exhibit in the Vatican museum.  I've spared you most of them.

What looks like a rug on the floor there is actually a mosaic.  Impressive, eh?

A photograph of the original ruins where the mosaic floor was discovered.

Again - not a fabric tapestry but a mosaic from tiny individual tiles.

I was just impressed with the optical illusion created through mosaic.

A really, really, really old necklace on display at the National Museum of Rome.

The display room was built to match the original room from which the walls were excavated so you could see the room as it was originally designed and used.

The ceiling of a hallway in the Vatican museum.

The Papal Apartment at the Vatican, to the side of St. Peter's Basilica

The center aisle is partitioned off in St. Peter's for those who wish to take pictures just like this one.

The exterior of St. Peter's Basilica is impressive as well.  (Luckily the lines weren't too long to go through security - just like at the airport, but you get to keep your shoes on.)

A sketch in the Vatican Museum.

I'm not quite sure ... (also in the Vatican Museum)

Photographs are forbidden in the Sistine Chapel but there you have it. Smack-dab in the center is what all the fuss was about - Michaelangelo's "Creation of David" (which is the background of this web page.)

Gotchya! The papparazzi strikes again!

(And yes, I'm well aware that only I could lump the Sistine Chapel and the Vatican Museum in the "Assorted Miscellaneous Other" category.)

This globe-like thing was in the giant courtyard of the Vatican Museum ...

... and it slowly rotated ...

...

... which seemed to mesmerize Al.

Hang on ...

.... whew!  The last one!
