Food in Rome

Eating Out & Shopping

Yes, I take pictures in the grocery stores of randomly amusing things - like the inventive name of this cereal.

Let me go on the record right now to say that there is nothing more chocolate-y than "cioccolato gelato" - talk about drool-a-rific!  (Can you believe that little cup was €3.00 which equates to about $4.50 USD?)

Trust me - there's a reason he looks so happy - their pizza was AMAZING!  And it's nothing like any pizza you've ever had anywhere in the United States.  It's crunchy on the bottom but still doughy.  The sausage was astoundingly wonderful.

Yep, the pizza was so good and we were so hungry after walking 5 miles that we dove into it before I remembered to take a picture.  When you order, she cuts off a hunk and weighs it. You pay based on the weight. If you're eating in the shop, she cuts it up for you after it comes out of the mini-pizza-oven (which you can kind of see behind her) which heats it up perfectly.

An offering of gelato near the Trevi Fountain ... oh man.

Stretching out after a nice meal at home, suited up and completely ready to dive into Cannoli Heaven!

Our favorite grocery store at the far end of Campo de Fiori (which means about 3 mins walk.)

Butcher shop also within Campo de Fiori with some rather unusual (by American standards) offerings. [I could have done without seeing the rabbit.]

The best sandwich shop ever! We got the same sandwiches from the same shop three times, they were that good.  [Sandwiches went on the plane with us on the way home - WAY better than whatever United was offering, trust me!]

Neither of us was brave enough to give it a try ...

The ONLY Asian restaurant we saw over the course of 5 miles a day of walking.

Our favorite restaurant in Rome - which happens to serve Tuscan food, go figure!

Outdoor dining is one thing.  Dining within inches of passing traffic is quite another, thank you very much!

There were two restaurants (up by the Cappuccin Crypt) that had ordinary brick-and-mortar setups but then also built an addition over the stairwell to the metro train station.

Al's proscuitto and mozzarella appetizer at one of those over-the-subway restaurants.

Yep, eating in the restaurant annex on the sidewalk over the subway stairs.

Roman Cooking

Cooking at the apartment was fun and challenging. Can you believe the apartment didn't have a cheese grater for the parmesan?

Above: steak with cappellini pasta & garlic.
Right: sausage and cockscombs pasta with breadsticks.

The bread was so fresh and the arugula salad was heavenly. The meats (salami, mortadella and proscuitti di parma) were out of this world.  All in all, a delicious yet simple meal.

The apartment had ONE knife and as you can see, the handle was positioned in such a way as to render it into a type of hacksaw.
(That's Al's Leatherman tool - the Swiss Army Knife on steroids - laying on the butcher block.)

You probably couldn't serve a lot of people at the table but it was still quite functional for the two of us.

This meal is trofie pasta with a porcini cream sauce - made at the apartment - with our fave: arugula salad with fresh shaved parmesan!

The sandwiches may not look like much but ...

That is some of the best focaccia bread EVER with fresh arugula, parmesan and proscuittio, a small drizzle of olive oil and some fresh cracked pepper.
